Makenna's 6 Year Check Up

Yes, I know she was 6 in February, but when she was younger, I never scheduled her in the winter because I was afraid she would get the flu. Sooooo due to insurance, we have to keep our scheduled yearly visits in the summer. It's okay... that way I have time to coach her before we go.... or so I thought. :)

On Wednesday, when the lady called to remind us of the aptmt, I asked her if Makenna would get shots. When she said no, I told her that she had made one little girl very happy. BUT I remembered last year. She hated getting her finger pricked and flipped out over having to change into a paper gown. So, we talked on the way there. Here was the conversation...

Mak - I'm not going to get a shot, am I?

Me - No, remember the lady said no shots.

Mak - Are they going to stick my finger?

Me (knowing the answer was yes) - I think so. You can ask when you get there.

Mak (as we were pulling into the parking lot) - Mama, I'm not sure about this.

Me - You will be fine. We'll go get a Sonic slush afterwards.

Mak - Mom, I'm a little nervous.

Me - I know, honey. It's okay... I get nervous when I go to the dr. It's completely normal. I'll be there for you. Everything will be okay.

When we walked in, signed in, and sat down, the nurse called her name. Of course, Makenna asked her if she was going to get her finger stuck. The nurse hesitantly said, "Yes."

She weighed Makenna and measured her height, and then she handed me the cup. I really thought this was freak out time, because I'd really forgotten about that part. Makenna was as calm as could be. When we came out of the bathroom, she knew it was time for the finger stick. I held her in my lap, and when the nurse got it out, Makenna flipped out. She was crying so hard that the dr. had to come over and reassure her. As the nurse was trying to stick her finger, Makenna was holding onto me for dear life yelling, "NO!!! Don't do it!!!!"

After calming down, we went into the exam room as if nothing had ever happened. The nurse handed me the paper gown and told me to help Makenna put it on. I asked her if it should open in the front or back, and she said that it didn't matter. So... Makenna decided to put it on like a coat... open in the front. When we got it on, she said, "This SURELY isn't a size 6!!!!" I almost fell in the floor laughing.... she will always be my little drama queen.

So the visit continued... the dr. came in and the next thing I knew Makenna was tickling him. He is an absolute wonderful dr. and played the tickle monster game with her as if he had nothing else to do. He checked her out going over the typical questions, comments, etc. After going over her statistics, he said, "Hmmmm!" I asked him if everything was okay. He responded, "She is definitely vertically challenged!" I again almost laughed him out of the room. WHat a great way to tell me she will be very short without having her hear it and feel bad about it.

Then, Makenna said, "I don't understand why I have to do all of these things. I could've told you that I was healthy." He responded with a smile on his face, "Remind me next time.... I will not do anything and document it in her file... patient says she is healthy!"

Well, that's about it! I'm SO thankful that Makenna is healthy and growing... who cares if she's vertically challenged??? I've been that way all of my life. :)
